Maureen Reddy Obituary

Maureen O’Leary Reddy, the daughter of the late Philip O’Leary and Alice Flagg O’Leary died at Keystone Place in Buzzards Bay on September 27th, 2024 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. Born in Worcester in 1950, she graduated from Notre Dame Academy and then went on to Harvard, where she received her BA cum laude with a joint degree in Latin and English. When her two daughters with husband Daniel Reddy were young, she remained at home with them, but when they went on to college, she returned to the Harvard Graduate School of Education where she received her doctorate in 1994. She took a special interest in gifted children and taught in the Worcester P.E.A.K. program in conjunction with the Worcester Art Museum. She also was a part time administrator at Quinsigamond Community College where she also created and ran a summer program for gifted children. She began working with Clark University’s Education Department in 1992 and became a faculty member until her retirement in 2015. At Clark, she taught college students studying elementary education and supervised them when placed in real-life classrooms in Worcester’s public elementary schools particularly The Goddard School of Science and Technology. She was fascinated with children’s spelling development. She co-wrote and edited “Creating Scientific Communities in the Elementary Classroom” with colleagues and teachers, an important collaboration on the subject. After they both retired to Sagamore Beach in 2015, she and Dan travelled extensively visiting England, Scotland, Wales, France, Portugal, and Italy, as well as places in Canada and the United States.

Maureen leaves her husband of 55 years, Dan Reddy, two daughters, Dawn Solowey and her husband Eric of Mattapoisett, and Tara Young and her husband Adam of Shrewsbury, four granddaughters, Julia and Katherine Solowey and Alice and Ruth Young, and a brother, Philip O’Leary and his wife Joyce Flynn of Yarmouth. She will also be missed by her many friends in the Worcester area, in Bourne, on Martha’s Vineyard and farther afield.

A service at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on the Canal, 165 Main St., Buzzards Bay, will be held October 5th at 10 AM followed by a nearby Celebration of Life.
